Kolkata’s Rajarhat area witnessed high tension on Friday afternoon after unidentified assailants opened fire on Trinamool Congress supporter Haji Israr Ahmed. The attack took place in Narayanpur, under New Town police station, with four rounds of gunfire targeting Ahmed. He escaped unhurt. Police arrived at the scene as locals gathered in protest.
Ahmed alleged that MLA Tapas Chatterjee was behind the attack and had sent a man named Azad to kill him. According to Ahmed, the hostility began after he invited Bidhannagar Municipality Chairman Sabyasachi Dutta to his home on Eid. He claimed that Chatterjee was angered by this and had verbally abused his father a day before the shooting.
Sabyasachi Dutta confirmed visiting Ahmed’s house on Eid but denied knowledge of any shooter. “I don’t know who Azad is. I only visited Israr’s house to seek blessings from his 92-year-old father,” Dutta stated. No response has been received from MLA Tapas Chatterjee regarding these allegations.
Ahmed’s relatives claimed that gunfire was directed at their house. The police are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been reported yet. Local sources stated that the attack has intensified political tensions in the area. Security has been increased to prevent further unrest.
The incident has once again highlighted factional tensions within the Trinamool Congress in Rajarhat. Law enforcement officials are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
